Mondays with Max: More talent at 26 Main

Last week, we enjoyed a couple of quotes from Max Perkins, former resident of 26 Main. Max wasn't the only creative soul in his household. His wife, Louise Saunders was also a dramatic, lively and creative personality.

Cornish, NH along with Windsor, VT was the heart of the Cornish Colony of artists that included Auguste St. Gaudens and Maxfield Parrish. Maxfield Parrish was an acclaimed illustrator, known for his imaginative and romantic settings. Louise Saunders worked with Maxfield Parrish to create the fable Knave of Hearts, published in 1925. It includes 22 illustrations by Parrish, which took him 3 years to complete, and by some descriptions, these illustrations are considered to be some of his finest work.

Check out this link to catch just a glimpse of the fantasy, whimsy and beauty of this collaboration between two artists who spent a considerable amount of time in Windsor. You can also see some of the prints here.

Also, if you love children's illustrations and you are in the area, visit the Cornish Colony Art Museum here in Windsor for their latest exhibition. We visited the museum this summer, and my three kids ages 11, 8, and 5 all found something they liked.

Windsor Wednesdays--Snap Birding!

On Wednesdays we will feature our town or events, destinations, insights, history, pictures, thoughts, interviews, etc from the area. There is a lot to see and do and this can be a spot to shed light on it :)

Don't forget to COMMENT on this post (and all from this week if you haven't already) to be entered in the Giveaway ending tomorrow! The more posts you comment on from Monday-Thursday, the more chances you have at winning!

SnapBirding!

Though Vermont is not necessarily one of the "hot spots" for American Birding, a surprising number of birds are found within a five minute walk of our little Inn. One of the great things about the Maxwell Evarts legacy is the pond behind the Inn and Paradise Park which was once part of the estate. You may even see birds like this Cedar Waxwing right in the Snapdragon back yard!

Here are just a few of the possible sightings. All of these shots were taken by one of our own, Chelle's dad Rich.

Our resident Blue Heron is almost guaranteed to be seen just steps out the back!

Look for the Peregrine Falcon in the trees overlooking the water.

Listen for the Red Bellied Woodpecker almost all year long.

Watch for the Red Tail Hawk soaring high above. You may even catch him with some
prey in his talons.

Even the common Song Sparrow can be appreciated in the gravel drive. The song is one of the most beautiful things you will ever hear.

The very shy Swainson's Thrush is actually a close relative to the very common American Robin. Both are likely at the Snapdragon!

You have to just love a bird named the Yellow Bellied Sapsucker! I think if more young people knew just how handsome this bird is, they wouldn't mind being called one!

Among our many Warblers are the Yellow Rumped. Once you get one of these in your binoculars you will definitely be enthralled!

So, come stay, bird and enjoy!

DIY Tuesday with the Brick Doctor

On Tuesdays we are going to focus on the Do-It-Yourself aspects of the Inn project which might include projects that others are helping us out with as well. We will try and give a glimpse of current work happening at the Inn or tips we have learned along the way.

The Brick Doctor

The Snapdragon Inn is a brick building built in 1825 so we have some bricks that are 184+ years old and luckily we have a local Brick Doctor who has been doing some work for us. This week they are working on fixing some brick on the third floor that is letting water in.

He has a passion for all things brick and mortar and we caught up with him today and he gave some insight on the building, the brick, and his passion for brick. We call him the Brick Man, Brick Doctor or Chimney Charlie. Take a look he has some interesting insights on Brick and the process to restore it.

Mondays with Max

Welcome to our new Monday feature, "Mondays with Max". The Max we are referring to is Maxwell Perkins, former resident of what is now Snapdragon Inn. Maxwell Perkins has been referenced here in the blog from time to time, but for our new readers, here is a little summary.

William Maxwell Evarts bought six houses in a row in Windsor as well as several acres of wooded area in the 1800s. The family referred to the woods as "Paradise". Eventually, the homes were sold or passed down through the family and the woods became the anchor for what is now Paradise Park. Max Perkins inherited the house from his mother and he brought his family to Windsor every summer. He wanted his 5 daughters to have the same joyful experiences in Windsor that he did.

By trade, Perkins was one of the most influential American literary editors of his time. He is most famous for his work with Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Wolfe.
In this feature, we'll be focusing on all things literary. Some will relate directly to Perkins, others will relate to Vermont or New England. Today, just for your pondering pleasure, I'd like to just share a few quotes from Maxwell Perkins on the subject of writing. Enjoy!

Anybody can find out if he is a writer. If he were a writer, when he tried to write of some particular day, he would find in the effort that he could recall exactly how the light fell and how the temperature felt, and all the quality of it. Most people cannot do it. If they can do it, they may never be successful in a pecuniary sense, but that ability is at the bottom of writing, I am sure.
- Maxwell Perkins

Just get it down on paper, and then we'll see what to do with it.- Maxwell Perkins

Friday tid-bits

First off we would like to send special BIRTHDAY WISHES to one of our Snapdragon team, Chelle/Michelle/ceiling painter extraordinaire on this, the day of her Birth!

Secondly, we would like to send a special shout out to Big Red in New Mexico for scoring a job after 3 months of continuous looking. Yes, we miss you here and all of your "Sweet Equity" labor but we are happy for you. Soak up that Southwestern Sun on your Iron Horse when you can! We were pretty spoiled to have Big Red and Chaz (aka Dad and Mom) here for so long and they were integral in the project so thought a little update on them would be appropriate.

Big Red and Chaz ready for the road--wherever it may take them!

We found this note on the floor when we were cleaning up and stuck
it up so we could always have a little bit of Mom in the Inn.

Thirdly, have an excellent weekend. It may only be 3PM on the East Coast but the sun is already dipping and the evening is quickly approaching so we will sign off until Monday where we look forward to our first GIVE AWAY as well as many new blog entries!

Give Away Sneak Peek!

We are going to wait until Monday to start our very first Snapdragon GIVE AWAY! Here is a sneak peak of what we are thinking about. Stay tuned!

The difference between Inns and B&Bs

"So you're opening a Bed and Breakfast?" people frequently ask us.
"Actually it's an inn," we reply.
"What's the difference?" they ask.
As it turns out, there is a difference or two. Let's see if we can clear this up for everyone.

The idea of weary travelers finding lodging with strangers in their homes is hardly a new idea. Even in the Bible it tells the story of one particular night when there was "no room at the inn". Historically taverns, inns, guesthouses and then Bed and Breakfasts were places that provided shelter and a meal. Come morning light, travelers were again on their way.

The term Bed and Breakfast was coined in Europe. Although there is no hard and fast regulations about what is provided, a B&B is usually a residence that offers lodging and breakfast. Generally, there are between 1-4 rooms with a shared bathroom for guests. Each B&B has it's own personality, and you can expect the proprietor to be friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Many B&Bs feature homes with historical value that have been restored to showcase the home in it's heyday. Antique lovers are often drawn to B&Bs for that very reason. Check in/out times are flexible, but remember if you arrive late, your host will be getting out of bed to let you in.

Inns are in between B&Bs and motels/hotels. Inns tend to be larger than B&B's and breakfast is not inclusive. Often inns will have dining rooms to offer as an option, but it is not included in the room rate. Inns tend to offer more services than B&Bs such as event planning, local tours, and more hotel like amenities. However, don't expect bell boys and turn down service at every inn. Just like B&Bs, they have their own personality and variety of staff. Generally speaking, the staff will be available during the day and early evening, but don't expect a full staff to be available 24 hours a day, as you find in most motel/hotel chains.

I found this article to be particularly helpful in explaining some of the differences. I also liked how it addressed the issue of bringing your children to inns or B&Bs. Here at Snapdragon Inn, we love kids (there are 11 little Snappers between the 5 of us). However, we recognize that if you are choosing to have a luxury inn experience, you are also probably looking for a little time away from your beloved little ones. I agreed with the point the article made that most inns and B&Bs are renovated homes, which means they aren't constructed to buffer all noise. Guests at inns and B&Bs should be thoughtful of their neighbors and focus on relaxing and unwinding. There are inns designed for families and that information should be very clearly stated on their marketing material or website.

There you have it. We look forward to seeing you soon at the INN. Give inns and B&Bs a try sometime and tell us what you find that you love/don't love.

Why do you like November?

November can be one of the HARDEST months in Vermont. The foliage has turned and fallen but the snow has yet to come and fill up the space the leaves have left behind. This year, we have had quite a few sunny November days which has been wonderful but as the temperature continues to drop we often have to remind ourselves what we like about November.

I was reminded of one thing as I looked out my bedroom window--
the way the skeletal branches are silhouetted against the wintery pink sunset over Lake Runnemede (right near the Inn). Windsor is beautiful ALL year round, even November.

What is something beautiful, comforting, unique or redeeming about November where you are?

Breakfast anyone?

(Pictured: custom Snapdragon napkin)

One of the things I look forward to most when I travel is free breakfast. Not every hotel or motel offers this service, but throughout my life I've noticed it becoming more common. When I worked for Days Inn, our complimentary breakfast included a meager fruit and danish offering. My family and I visited an Embassy Suites hotel this summer that had a full on breakfast buffet including hot and cold items and plenty of them.

Here at Snapdragon Inn we are getting into the details of things and so we are reaching out to our future guests for ideas. What do you love to eat for breakfast? What places have you visited that have had memorable morning muffins? Because we aren't a bed and breakfast, we are an inn (Nate will have to do a post on the difference), breakfast won't be inclusive, but we would like to offer something to our guests to get their day started on the right foot.

Let us know what you've experienced that you've loved. Pancakes? French toast? Gourmet hot chocolate and coffee? Fruit? Organic? Homemade? Don't miss your chance to help the Snappers get it just right in the morning.

Tree Swing?

There is a big old beautiful tree in the back of the Inn with a swing. Thoughts on tree swings--yay or nay? The kids sure do love it.

Drum Roll Please...

The moment you have all been waiting for--well some of you anyway-- our first Snapdragon Design Team BEFORE and AFTER.

Big high fives to K80 and Chaz for their super reupholstering skills. I had to take them right up to their new home in Room 7 where they looked perfect. Remember when we found that chair at Brimfield and that roll of fabric? That pillow isn't quite the right proportions but I just wanted to pull some of our custom Snapdragon fabric out.

So exciting.

This little light of mine

As rooms get painted, the light fixtures are going up and they are looking gooood. A special thanks to K80 for all her hard work researching the lights so that we only had to pick from 200 instead of 5,000. It seems like ages ago that we had the lights ordered and delivered so it is exciting to see them going up.

Progess Report

A peek into the entry from the dining room

Prepping the lawn for the winter after raking and blowing leaves
for 2 days.

The first floor painting is moving right along. The entry is looking fresh in "Longacre" Green and contrasts well against the red dining room. McK, K80 and I worked on the very very picky cutting in of the trim in the dining room and entry, Chelle painted ceilings, Mike raked leaves with the boys, Kevin became one with the caulking gun in the dining room, Brady and Clark worked on putting up the granite slabs around the parking area, while JD gave the Inn what could be its last mow of the year.

When the light went up in the dining room it made the room feel that much more done. It is amazing to see these rooms transform and quite rewarding to see our efforts make something look so good. This is the fun part!
