Good Morning and welcome to Day 5 of our "12 Nights" Giveaway! Details on how to enter can be found at the end of this post. Today, we're talking about Winter Activities!
It was a chilly 5 degrees Fahrenheit here in Windsor and we finally have a small base of snow on the ground. It's that time of the year when you actually wish a BIG storm would dump a foot or two on the world. There is something surreal when the world feels like a snow globe, quiet and magical as the snow falls in a thick layer of white.
All of the area ski areas (Okemo, Stratton, Killington ) are open and grooming and adding trails daily. Our local sports shop, Paradise Sports, is even getting miles of FREE cross country/snowshoe trails groomed and ready for use! This is a new addition to town this year and very exciting.
We also have beautiful Paradise Park right out the back door of the Inn which offers a wonderful space for snowshoeing, ice fishing, and winter treks for anyone!
Our town also freezes over the common to be a small ice skating rink and of course our Recreational Department has various activities going for all ages. A couple of our boys are playing on team "SPURS" in the youth basketball program.
Our fearless Snapdragon, Jim, is a telemark skier/biker extraordinaire. Check out this video, "Bark" of him and his pals navigating between the back country trees of our very own Mt. Ascutney.

New Zealand, December 2009
What is your winter activity? Do you have a favorite spot to ski or snow shoe? Do you prefer to stay in or get out? One of our Snapdragons is from New Zealand, and it is summer in December so he loves tramping (hiking & camping) but some of you may be from sunnier/warmer climates than Vermont. What do you like to do in the "winter" months where you are?

I am excited for the snowshoeing trails!
I love cross country skiing. Those trails in Paradise Park look like a lot of fun.
i love cross country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, and drinking hot chocolate inside.
Sledding with the kids over at the golf course here in Windsor is always fun... and the hot chocolate afterwards!!
I like sitting by a nice warm fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate and knitting with friends.

I love avoiding winter.
but if I HAVE to, cos there is no other choice...then... hmm.. snow mobiling was pretty darn fun in colorado last year.
I love snowboarding when the snow is fluffy. Then eating waffles and hot chocolate and anything hot and fried I get off the slopes :)
I used to ski and snowboard, but am now more of a snow shoeing kind of girl.
I love to snowshoe and figure skate! I haven't done much of either since my son was born (with another on the way), but we are bound to get back into the swing of things next winter. Before kids my husband I loved to snowshoe up Camel's Hump and Mount Mansfield which was near our college (JSC). Now our snowshoeing usually consists of Paradise Park, Ascutney View Cemetery, Saint Gaudens and Mount Ascutney.
I would love to do some snowshoeing in Paradise Park with camera in hand- winter photography excursion. When I still lived in Vermont, I remember bidding on a pair of snowshoes during a silent auction. I got outbid and still think about those snowshoes! And I am definitely in for that hot chocolate indoors that everyone is mentioning!
I want to know more about the wee baby in the last picture. :)
I think one of my favorite winter activities is running while it snows. If I can get away from the family, there isn't a better time to run. It's usually warmer and it's always so quiet when the snow falls, I love listening to the snow crunch under my feet.
What a lovely inn! The cross-country sking and snowshoeing would be terrific!
