Visit from the Lieutenant Governor

Yesterday, we had a visit from Lieutenant Governor Brian Dubie. He's running for governor so has taken to the streets to meet and greet local businesses around Vermont. He was excited to tour the Inn and was interested to hear from us and our experiences as small business owners in Windsor. Once again, it was great to show people the space.

Filling up Room 9

Clean Slate Room 9: May 18 2010

Room 9 : September 27 2010

Last night we held a mixer for the Windsor Mt. Ascutney Region Chamber of Commerce at the Inn. It was wonderful to let some of the other local business owners mix, mingle, and enjoy the the space. It was also rewarding to have people pick up on so many of the details that went into each room as we filled them up.

Weekend Flower Arrangements

These gorgeous flower arrangements were created by our very own Keighty. She picked them all on a walk around the lake and then created these striking arrangements (while 6 months pregnant). They were the perfect touch to bring the lovely autumn foliage into the Inn.

More interesting history

The other day an author who is working on the biography of William Henry Seward emailed to let us know that Seward met with William Maxwell Evarts (former owner of 26 Main) at the house here in Windsor in 1860 to work on Seward's presidential strategy. He ended up losing the Republican nomination to Lincoln, but then became Secretary of State and has a very interesting history that you can learn more about here. This house never ceases to amaze us.

Nice mention in Vermont Tourism

image via www.vermontvacation.com

There was a fantastic feature on the official Vermont tourism site about Windsor that included a nice mention of the Inn.
Overlooking the banks of the Connecticut River and beneath the region’s famed Mt. Ascutney, Windsor is a town where the best of the past is both preserved and fueling new ventures.

This is where, in 1777, the first Constitution in America to prohibit slavery, insure voting rights, and authorize a public school system was adopted. Looking much as it did more than 200 years ago, the tavern where it happened is now a Vermont State Historic Site, open daily during the spring, summer and fall.

Nearby is the commanding Robbins and Lawrence Armory and Machine Shop. During the mid 19th century this company designed and manufactured machine tools that accelerated the industrial revolution. Today it is home to the American Precision Museum with its detailed exhibits, including period machinery, about the manufacturing history of the region.

Windsor’s 1798 Old South Church was designed by American architect Asher Benjamin, who, through the publication of a series of pattern books, brought architectural know-how to ordinary builders. One of the longest covered bridges in America connects Windsor to neighboring Cornish, NH, where the Cornish Colony Museum is located in an historic firehouse. The museum stages exhibitions of the renowned artists, sculptors, writers, architects and landscape designers who lived and worked in this area.

There’s still industry in Windsor, but it’s now of a different type.

World-famous Simon Pearce welcomes visitors to the “See It Made” Park where trained artisans are at work making hand-thrown pottery and blown glass. Next door is Harpoon Brewery where they brew a variety of beers and ales as well as Vermont Draft Soda - and serve up delicious meals, too.

Gracious lodging options come cloaked in history. Juniper Hill Inn and Snapdragon Inn are both large stately old homes. Cider Hill Gardens & Gallery offers a unique combination of greenhouses, gardens and fine art. Other shops offer books, fine crafts, antiques, liquors, wines, gifts and clothing.

Thanks VT tourism! Click here to visit the site for more information on visiting Vermont.

Happy Birthday Max!

Today we think of Max Perkins and his day of birth September 20,1884. It has been a fascinating and exciting to learn more of the editor, the father, and the man who spent nearly every summer of his life in Windsor. We are honored to hold this history at our Inn.

Happy Birthday Max!

"If you are not discouraged about your writing on a regular basis, you may not be trying hard enough. Any challenging pursuit will encounter frequent patches of frustration. Writing is nothing if not challenging."
--Maxwell Perkins

A big thanks to Mike Sclafani for these wonderful shots taken during his stay at the Inn with his beautiful family. I love how he captured the foliage in its first stages of change. Everything has a golden glow. They also visited Woodstock and Quechee during their visit which have some lovely sites and are only 25 minutes drive from the Inn.

We are so excited to receive some of the shots our guests are capturing and see the beautiful area from their perspective (and nice not to be the one behind the camera)

We are excited for this

The Snapdragon Inn is hosting its first wedding in a couple weeks. Exciting! Now, we're keeping our fingers crossed for glorious foliage and clear skies. It was quite fun to see it in print on their annoucement.

The perfect quote

"Max Perkins: Editor of Genius" by A. Scott Berg, the biography we mentioned a couple weeks ago that is in talks for a big screen version with Sean Penn has some great Windsor mentions. One of the best is on page 22 and I think it is the perfect quote for our Inn paired with the fantastic reviews we've been receiving on the comfort of our beds.
Bed time had always been Perkins favorite time of the day, those few minutes just before falling asleep when he could "steer his dreams." In those final moments of wakefulness Maxwell Perkins recurringly transported himself back to Russia in 1812--the scene of his favorite book, War and Peace. Night after night his mind filled with visions of Napoleon's army retreating from Moscow in the frost and early winter snow. On mornings in Vermont after Tolstoi's character' s had paraded before him, he insisted that his dreams were more more vivid and that he slept more soundly in Windsor than anywhere else.

The leaves, they are a changin'

The days are cooling off and the nights even cooler. From the few preview leaves I have seen, I think it is going to be a beautiful foliage this year.

Final Touches

We have officially checked in our first guests and hopefully they are cuddled up in what one of our "test guests" said were "delicious" beds. We spent the morning, steaming bed skirts, placing amenities, folding towels, hanging robes, and making all the final touches in anticipation of their arrival. I think we may be a little too busy to really take in this momentous day but maybe its best that it came and went. Onto day two!

Thanks to Joy for the beautiful flowers you sent!
